Intuitive Machines, with its Nova-C cargo lander, dubbed "Odysseus," successfully achieved the first American lunar landing since 1972.
Notably, it's also the first commercial entity to accomplish such a mission, with previous landings conducted solely by government agencies.
Following a series of maneuvers, the lander touched down in the Malapert A crater.
The landing site is about 300 kilometers from the moon's south pole.
The primary objective of the mission is to operated on the lunar surface for up to seven days, carrying various government and commercial payloads.
Despit the excitement surrounding the achievement, it marks a broader geopolitical race to the moon, with other nations and private companies investing heavily in lunar exploration.
In January, Japan also joined the ranks of lunar explorers, becoming the fifth nation to achieve a moon landing.
