My First Native Speaker Teacher / 나의 첫 원어민 선생님
These days, it's common to see native-speaking English teachers in both the public and private education sectors in Korea.
I found myself thinking about my first native-speaking English teacher.
It was back in 1997 during my middle school years.
As part of a pilot project of the Department of Education, native-speaking English teachers were temporarily assigned to public middle schools.
The teacher who came to our school was a young African American woman named Tonya Jefferson.
I only had a few classes with her, during a period of just over a month.
I didn't fully understand everything she said in English.
But she was ahead of the curve with her fashion-forward leggings, and she always greeted us with a bright smile.
I remember it all as if it were yesterday.
