Mixed Emotions / 웃어야 할지, 울어야 할지

A friend of mine recently placed his 93-year-old mother in a nursing home.
Afterwards, he called me to talk about his mixed feelings about it.
I also felt a lump in my throat.
My own 89-year-old mother spends her days at a "senior day care center," and I could relate to my friend's situation.

My friend shared a story of two brothers who are living in the same nursing home as his mother.
The brothers are in their mid-80s and suffer from dementia.
They share a room, and every morning when they wake up, they greet each other by introducing themselves.
The younger brother says, "Oh! Your name is the same as my older brother's."

And the other responds, "What a coincidence! your name is the same as my younger brother's."
They are delighted to find this connection.

Listening to this story, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
My friend said, "I should live my best life while my mind is clear."

I feel the same way.
